Students in the Certified Nursing Assistant /Phlebotomy Trade learn such things as an introduction to the health care system, understanding basic human needs, sensitivity to problems of aging and disabled individuals, creating and maintaining a safe environment, proper positioning and moving of individuals, oral hygiene, and personal care, which includes bathing, grooming, and dressing. Also taught are basic dietary needs and special dietary conditions, dealing with elimination needs, and taking vitals (temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, height, weight).
 
Classes are also taught on care for individuals with special needs, exercise, prosthetic and assistive devices, and skin care, including dressings, compresses, and soaks. Nursing assistants carry out important functions in various health agencies such as hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, home health care agencies, retirement homes, assisted living, school districts and more. In these settings, they play an important role in the care of people who are sick or those who can't take care of themselves.
 
Phlebotomy students will also cover such things as an overview of the anatomy and physiology of the human body and the circulatory system, an understanding of blood collection equipment and supplies, venipuncture procedure, skin puncture procedures, special blood tests and procedures, and proper handling of samples taken, as well as laboratory math. As a phlebotomy technician, you will also work in some of the sites that CNA's.
  • Courses are now being offered for acute care CNA training.
  • Students in the CNA/Phlebotomy Trade will participate in a minimum of 100 clinical hours at local healthcare sites.
  • In order for students to continue on in Phlebotomy, they must first become a CNA.
  • Phlebotomy students will complete an additional 100 hours minimum of clinicals and will need to have 125 successful venipunctures and 25 finger sticks.
  • Students completing the CNA Trade will earn 10 college credits free through the Tech Prep Program at Big Bend Community College.
Requirements for Nursing Assistant and Phlebotomy Technician
  • Must be 17 1/2 for Nursing Assistant
  • Must be 18 for Phlebotomy Technician
  • Must be able to successfully pass a background inquiry
  • Must be able to read, write, and understand English at the level necessary for performing duties of the nursing assistant (WAC 246-841-400)
  • Must be able to lift/ transfer/ reposition a client/ resident/ patient
 
Duties of a Nursing Assistant
  • Assists client with bathing, mouth care, and skin care
  • Taking vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, respirations, temp) and recording
  • Assists with grooming and dressing
  • Assists with eating and hydration
  • Assists with transferring/positioning/turning client
  • Demonstrates proficiency in CPR/Safety/Emergency procedures
  • Demonstrates and promotes confidentiality/resident rights/interpersonal skills
 
Duties of a Phlebotomy Technician
  • Understand universal precautions/HIPPA/patient rights/OSHA
  • Demonstrate knowledge of appropriate tubes
  • Demonstrates successful blood draws
 
Job Information
  • Students in the CNA/Phlebotomy Trade will complete as a nursing assistant, and then will take the state exam to become a Certified Nursing Assistant.
  • Starting wages for graduates of the CNA/Phlebotomy Trade average from $8-10/hour for CNAs and $10-12/hour for phlebotomists, depending where students relocate.
  • Graduating students in the CNA/Phlebotomy Trade can work in assisted living facilities, nursing homes, retirement homes, hospitals and clinics, and home health care.
